Mauricio Santana
A photographer of feelings.

May 2010, this is the month that marks three years of Mauricio Santana, better known as Tux, as a photographer.

He is self-taught and shared his passion for photography with a job that could pay his bills. Today, as a professional photographer, he uses all his time available studying, researching and increasing his portfolio shooting bands either for promotional or on stage pics.

He’s easily found shooting bands in São Paulo or in some other cities in Brazil. Within any rock or hardcore scene, he is one of a few with enough skills to face an excited, crazy crowd in small local events or big concerts in venues like Hangar 110, packed with Agnostic Front fans, or in more private, but not less intense, small concerts.

Something that began as a challenge, today it is part of a enviable and recognized job by many of the artists who use his photos in their official websites, MySpace pages and countless flyers.

In Flames (Switzerland), Otep (Los Angeles), Red Dons (USA), Will Champion (ARG), Earth Crisis (NY), 108 (NY) Symbiosis (POR), Defect Defect (USA), Cockney Rejects (UK), Strike Anywhere (USA), Rufio (USA), Interpol (NY) The Used (USA), Have Heart (USA), Kittie (CAN), LCD Soundsystem (NY), Boom Boom Kid (ARG), Horace Pinker (USA), Walls of Jericho (USA), All The Hats (ARG), D-Sailors (DE), No Use For A Name (USA), The Donnas (USA), As I Lay Dying (U.S.) Suicide Silence (USA), Cannibal Corpse (USA) among many Brazilian artists like Dance of Days, Dead Fish, Capital Inicial, Nando Reis, Cesar Menotti & Fabiano and Confronto (one of the bands of whom he is the official photographer) are those already awarded by the quality of his photos.

It did not take too long for his work to gain international prominence. In addition to photos in many publications in Japan, he is also the author of the photo for the new Boom Boom Kid EP poster and the Will Champion CD cover (both Argentinean bands).

He continues to work hard to improve his techniques and taking the next step, which is living for photography, being even more recognized by his professionalism, quality of work and perfect angles.

In a world in which they say nothing else can be invented, he is managing, with great personality, to print his ideas and is already identified by his unique point of view with the camera. His work is commonly recognized even without his signature.

More than just being a great photographer, Mauricio is first and foremost an artist who knows how to capture the right moment and to share the emotion at the right time.

He is not only a band photographer, but an artist of feelings and emotions.

FRICTIONS mixes live action and stop motion animation and has been shot with a Canon Camera 5D Mark II and a 24-70 L lens, in a blue screen studio located in Ensad’s building.

Information on Norton “Stuff Anthem” from Psyop’s Fletcher Moules, who was creative director on the spot along with Laurent Ledru.

Stuff. Stuff. Stuff.

No, not just “stuff” with a small “s,” but Stuff. Your Stuff. The Stuff that lives on your hard drive, your devices, and on the web. Your Stuff is more than just data. It’s your life. The Stuff that connects you with the people you love. The Stuff that puts you on the grid as a contributing member of society. It’s who you are Stuff, where you’ve been and where you’re going Stuff.

For “Stuff Anthem” we took this idea of Stuff and embodied it in a character and follow him through the world as he grows up, adding more stuff to his life and trying to hold onto and keep track of all the stuff he has.

Visually, we gave the character a cute likeable look and personality and the world around him a handmade ink and watercolor feel. We didn’t want anything to feel overly slick or techy. It’s all imbued with a bit of whimsy and fun. As the spot moves along, the visuals build and get more complex as our main character gets more stuff and tries harder and harder not to lose it. The color palette we used was also very important in the narrative journey. We developed a base palette from the Norton’s brand and this set the tone for beginning and end. However, we wanted the viewer to feel like they went on the journey with Mr. Stuff. When things got tough for him, so did the palette.

We really wanted the animation and the story to unfold as simplistic as possible. The aim was to create a handcrafted world for a software company. Though the characters are all 3D, our intention for the campaign was to have a traditional 2D feel. In order to achieve this, in the timeline we were given, we relied heavily on new techniques in digital production – all the characters are 3D, the backgrounds are projected in Nuke and AE, and much of the character lighting is done with Nuke’s Relighting tools using Normals passes. At the same time, we used some pretty old school animation techniques, like when the taxi takes off and heads to the town.

The “Life in a Day” Trailer

On July 24, 2010, thousands of people around the world uploaded videos of their lives to YouTube to take part in Life in a Day, a historic cinematic experiment to create a documentary film about a single day on earth.

Now, it’s time to watch their story unfold on the big screen.

Directed by Oscar winner Kevin Macdonald, Life in a Day wowed audiences at the Sundance, Berlin and SXSW film festivals and during its YouTube world premiere in January.
